Few styles have been rehabilitated as successfully as the cargo pant. Formally derided as a fratty faux pas, they’ve since gained purchase among blue chip designer brands such as Brunello Cucinelli and N. Peal.
Utilitarian in origin, the style can be traced back to a design intended for U.S. paratroopers in WWII. By making its pockets oversized and bellowed, the designers of the first cargo pants allowed soldiers to tote grenades, flares and other essential gear in their trousers.
It’s highly unlikely that you are wearing the style to transport munitions today. But the cargo pant has survived, and even evolved as fashion has increasingly adopted the design. Read on below for our pick of cargo pants from brands including RRL, N. Peal, Velasca and more.
