Frequently asked questions
Is a foundation with SPF good for your skin?
Foundation with SPF is generally good for your skin, but it’s important to apply a sufficient amount to get the most protection. Half a teaspoon of foundation infused with sunscreen is recommended, which is a thick layer for many people, but will help guard against UV rays, says Dr. Nazarian. This is why doubling up and applying a great sunscreen for under makeup is key: “I always recommend wearing a dedicated sunscreen underneath your makeup first and then looking at SPF makeup as additional protection throughout the day,” says Ventre. As a reminder: SPF in makeup does work, but you have to apply an optimal amount.
Is foundation with SPF good for aging skin?
“Daily SPF is one of the best things you can do for aging skin,” says Ventre. “I especially love SPF foundations for mature skin when they also contain hydrating or skin care–focused ingredients because they help the skin look healthier, fresher, and more radiant instead of dry or heavy.”
We chose our list of SPF foundations based on the following criteria: SPF protection level of at least 30, coverage type (light, medium, or full), and long-lasting wear. We sought expert advice from dermatologists and makeup artists on ingredients, finish, and application tips. During testing, we evaluated coverage by checking if they were able to conceal pimples, dark spots, discoloration, and other blemishes. We favored picks that featured skin-friendly ingredients like hyaluronic acid and niacinamide to soften, plump, and hydrate. The ones that made the cut held up throughout a full day, were buildable, and worked on a variety of skin types.
